LOTUS BAZAAR
2002
Smithsonian Folk Life Festival - Washington D.C.

Sethi conceived and designed the Lotus Bazaar as part of the Silk Road Festival.

The Lotus, a prominent symbol of creation and fertility across civilisations, embodies the idea of beauty and resilience from humble beginnings.

Much like the Greek agora, the Lotus Bazaar is a crucible of culture and commerce, a space to meet, create, trade and take refuge. Home to a spirit of enterprise and an entire way of life, there are many things to learn here as notions of work, time, consumption & solidarity are realigned to deal with the pressures of the twenty-first century.

This is a market facilitation package that brings contextual, design-driven services to bear on cultural enterprise. Presenting traditional crafts to a competitive global market of fair-trade and museum shops, it highlights the pioneering craft and versatile craftsmanship of Asia and is a springboard for direct retail by NGOs, groups and individual producers to new clients.

It simultaneously contextualizes topical issues through exhibitions, runs marketing clinics with designers, users, craftspeople and facilitators to analyze and streamline customised craft production with new design, and also creates Theatres of the Arts where artists demonstrate & exchange skills & knowledge with local talent & a host community of users.

The Lotus Bazaar was first opened at the Smithsonian Folk Life Festival in June 26th 2002, in the lawns of the Freer & Sackler galleries by the National Mall of Washington DC.

Later the Bazaar was designed as a unique market development package for the artists, artisans and cultural enterprises of developing countries at the Forum of Cultures in Barcelona 2004, where it comprised an exhibition on Micro-credit organizations.
